Common Types of Tenosynovitis

Vicky Noll

Tenosynovitis in runners often affects the tendons around the ankles and feet, particularly the Achilles tendon and the posterior tibial tendon. These areas are prone to overuse injuries due to repetitive stress and high impact.

Common Types in Runners:

  1. Achilles Tenosynovitis:

    • Inflammation of the sheath around the Achilles tendon, which connects the calf muscles to the heel bone.

    • Commonly caused by repetitive stress, sudden increases in training intensity, improper footwear, or poor running mechanics.

  2. Posterior Tibial Tenosynovitis:

    • Inflammation of the tendon that runs along the inside of the ankle and foot, helping support the arch.

    • Often results from overpronation, excessive mileage, or running on uneven surfaces.

When It Becomes Injured:

  • Overuse: Repetitive motions without adequate rest can cause microtrauma to the tendon sheath.

  • Sudden Increases in Activity: Rapidly ramping up mileage or intensity can strain the tendons.

  • Improper Footwear: Worn-out shoes or lack of proper support can alter biomechanics, increasing stress on the tendons.

  • Poor Running Form: Biomechanical issues, like overpronation or an uneven gait, can place extra stress on specific tendons.

Preventing tenosynovitis involves proper warm-up, gradual increases in training load, wearing supportive footwear, and addressing any biomechanical issues. Regular stretching and strengthening exercises can also help maintain tendon health.
